It was a lucky chance that I looked up when I did and spotted this wasp beetle in the persimmon tree above me. I had to climb the tree to get the photos. In the third photo you can see that this is a female and she’s using her ovipositor to lay eggs in cracks in the tree bark. The larvae will then burrow into the wood, potentially causing a great deal of damage.
