I went for a walk in Fureiai Forest (fureiai no mori) and was lucky enough to see a Japanese pygmy woodpecker (kogera). It’s the first one I’ve seen, although I’ve heard them lots of times. This type of woodpecker is only tiny (15cm) and the one I saw was way up in the top of a tree – my excuses for the poor quality of the picture and video below!!

Unfortunately it’s all in Japanese, but he has some great shots and even mouseover image changes to see birds at different angles. I’m impressed with his skills!
